The beasts moved slowly to the middle of the arena, then paced around the platform that held Babette and Glyzix. They licked their lips and flicked their horrible tongues.

The sight of these horrendous creatures seemed to shock them out of Wizbad’s spell.

“I get it,” said Babette. “Wizbad knows we hate each other and believes we’re so stupid that one of us will knock the other off this platform to certain death.”

“Exactly,” said Glyzix. “So all we have to do is not fight.”

“You, sir, are correct,” said Babette. “I hate saying that, because, let me tell you, I was really looking forward to punching you in all your eyes.”

“Yoo-hoo! Sorry to interrupt!” called Wizbad, speaking into a microphone. “Good plan, except perhaps you didn’t notice that the platform is shrinking!”

He was right. The platform was shrinking.

“Soon it will only be large enough to hold-eth one of you,” he said. “So, you can be all noble and dumb and choose-eth not to do battle, and one of you will eventually fall to the beasts anyway. Or you can be smart and fight to save-eth yourself.”
